im stuck on the elf starting area.

I finished all of the quests there and talked to the girl.
Shes asking me to deliver a letter to Castanea and the only road leading out of the empty sandbox map has this Japanese text blocking me.
This is my first time playing so I might be missing something obvious.
Please help.
